Profile of a Campus

Emphasis on Education

This section provides an in-depth analysis of graduation data for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. Graphs, tables, and rankings provide detailed insights in campus's educational fabric through the last 40 years.

Graduation data from the IPEDS universe (1984-2004) are from:

U.S. Dept. of Education, National Center for Education Statistics. INTEGRATED POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION DATA SYSTEM (IPEDS): EARNED DEGREES, ____ Washington, DC: U.S. Dept. of Education, National Center for Education Statistics [producer], ____.

Graduation data from the HEGIS universe (1966-1982) are from:

U.S. Dept. of Education, National Center for Education Statistics. HIGHER EDUCATION GENERAL INFORMATION SURVEY (HEGIS) __: DEGREES AND OTHER FORMAL AWARDS CONFERRED BETWEEN ____ [Computer file]. Latest Year Line Ranks / Cohort Ranks

Latest Year Line Ranks / Cohort Ranks provide three separate sections detailing internal UIUC rankings and peer standings. The Latest Year Line Ranks order all instructional lines by a number of criteria in which UIUC awarded 1 or more degrees in 2004. For example, the line with the most female graduate students, or the largest percentage of minority undergraduate students, are all available here. Sum total ranks are also provided for UIUC's Size Cohort and Carnegie Cohort, allowing the UIUC's performance against its peers to be measured in each of these categories.

UIUC By Year Code List

UIUC By Year Code List lists instructional lines under which UIUC awarded BS/MS/CAS/Phd/Pro degrees from 1966 to 2004. For each year, two tables are available, one sorted by the total number of degrees awarded, and one sorted by the CIP/SUBJ/DISC code. The "by Total" sorted table makes it easy to see under which lines the University awarded the most degrees each year. The "by CIP/SUBJ/DISC" sorts the lines by their code under the taxonomy active in that year (CIP2000, CIP1990, CIP1985, HEGIS SUBJ, HEGIS DISC), making it easy to see related lines side-by-side.

UIUC Cohorts

UIUC Cohorts provides two sets of peer cohorts for UIUC. The Cohort by Size is computed per year, and includes all institutions which were in the top quartile in the US in terms of total degrees awarded that year. The Carnegie Cohort includes all institutions with the same Carnegie Classification as UIUC. These cohorts are used by many of the graphs and tables in this section, and these pages provide greater detail on the selection of and important notes regarding these cohorts.

International Students

International Students focus section presents data on enrollment of foreign students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus from 1967 to 1999. General statistics, as well as individual country graphs are presented.

Instructional Groups

Instructional Group compilations on this page provide aggregate statistics on each major CIP2000 instructional group (2-digit series XX.0000). A detailed set of graphs and tables, including race and gender indicators, are provided for each line.

Instructional Lines

Instructional Lines compilations on this page provide statistics on each IBHE-assigned UIUC CIP2000 line. According to the Division of Management Information, the Illinois Board of Higher Education assigns a specific CIP code to each department that is a "best fit" representation of the degrees awarded from that department. A detailed set of graphs and tables, including race and gender indicators, are provided for each line.
