Education: Instructional Groups: List of Groups
Below is a list of all instructional lines that were included in the computation of each line group, along all of the year ranges in which each line was an active NCES line. NOTE that this may not be the same method of line group computation used in other studies. This particular grouping schema was designed to capture much of the semantic connectivity of the lines. It was derived by computing all CIP2000 lines under which UIUC awarded degrees in 2004, and then using the NCES crosswalks to compute the CIP1990 (1990-1999), CIP1985 (1984-1989), HEGIS SUBJECT (1971-1982), and HEGIS DISCIPLINE (1966-1969) lines. Older lines tended to be broader, and may differ slightly from their corresponding newer lines, but NCES has determined these lines to be the "best fit" correlate between taxonomies. Please note that gaps in HEGIS coverage mean that no data is available for 1970 and 1983. The CIP1980 taxonomy was overlapped by HEGIS SUBJ for all but the 1983 year, with CIP1985 largely taking over by 1984, but due to issues with surviving CIP1980 documentation, it was decided not to attempt to reconstruct 1983 data via its IPEDS compilation.
