Profile of a Campus

Inside Campus

The following sections provide an in-depth view of campus from financial, educational, operations, and many other standpoints. This data covers 244 campus units across 440 indicators with 9 years of reporting data (1996-1997 academic year to 2004-2005 academic year - not all indicators available for all units in all years). The data used for this focus section is from the Division of Management Information, Copyright 2006, Board of Trustees, University of Illinois. Reproduced with Permission.

This data is extremely nuanced and it is especially important that users of this focus section properly understand the complete context of a given indicator to appropriately utilize it for analysis. The following glossary is provided to assist with understanding these indicators. To use this glossary, refer to the 4-digit code listed beside each indicator.

Please see more information about the Project Methodology for more information about the reliability of these results. In particular, it is important to keep in mind that special circumstances surrounding individual departments can affect the interpretation of their indicators. For example, the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS), listed as "State Geological Survey" in the data, is a UIUC Allied Agency and only a portion of its employees are employed by the University. The interpretation of ISGS' ranking in each indicator, as well as the meaning of its value in that indicator should take this status into consideration.

For example, its ranking of third on campus (with 92.4%) in total percentage of operating budget from grants and contracts (indicator 2640) is not representative of the ISGS as a whole, since it considers only expenditures relating to the University, and not the portion of its operating budget under State control. Also, indicators such as total number of academic staff that are women (indicator 1862), which lists the ISGS as 17th on campus in 2005 with 28 women, is lower than the actual value, since it considers only ISGS personnel employed by the University, rather than the State.
